The Committees and Working Groups of UCLG meet in Barcelona

On September 18th, took place in Barcelona the annual meeting of the World Secretariat of UCLG. In this meeting, the representatives from the Committees and Working Groups presented an update of their last activities and the next events and actions to be developed.
The City of Bilbao ensures since October 2006 the Presidency of the Committee on Information Society (CIS) of UCLG. Since its creation and until today, the CIS has been doing all its efforts to reduce the Digital Divide that separates cities and municipalities from all over the world and to move forward in the creation of inclusive municipalities and cities through the use of Information and Communication Technologies as a tool for development.
The Technical Secretariat of the CIS took part in the meeting in Barcelona to report on the activities developed by the Committee since its last meeting held in November 2008 in Istanbul. This meeting was attended by more than 20 members of the CIS and in it, the Presidency of the Committee informed about the positive balance of the activities carried out during the last years, as well as the objectives that have been achieved.
Some of the activities reported in the meeting of Barcelona, that can be remarked are: the collaboration with the Eixo Atlantico to give a training course in Galicia on the design of the Digital Local Agenda, the participation of the CIS in the meeting of Executive Bureau of UCLG held in Copenhagen as well as the participation in the session on “Technology Transfer” of the “Local Government Climate Change Summit” also held in Copenhagen.
During the meeting besides the report of the activities developed, the CIS also informed the World Secretariat of UCLG on the next events and activities of the Committee. The closest one will be the next meeting of the Committee to be held in November 2009 during the World Council of UCLG in Guangzhou, China. During this meeting the members will discuss and approve the new focus of the committee and will present their experiences in the subject. With this new focus, the Committee will try to strengthen the relation between the members and encourage them to participate more actively in the committee.
